Tennessee is one of the most beautiful places in the country, and thousands of people from all over the world visit every year to take advantage of the cooler mountain air in August and enjoy a wide variety of winter sports in February.  There’s an sharp increase in the amount of traffic during tourist season and to protect drivers on the road, Tennessee requires that all vehicles registered and driven in the state must possess auto liability insurance.  Failure to provide proof of insurance when requested can result in a fine and suspension of your license.

Tennessee Auto Insurance Requirements

Liability auto insurance is required in Tennessee and must include at a minimum:

$25,000.00 for one injury or death
$50,000.00 for all injuries or deaths
$15,000.00 for property damage for one accident

This type of insurance offers no payment for damage to your vehicle or injury to you when involved in an accident where you are at fault or are involved in a hit-and-run.

Tennessee Auto Insurance Recommendations

Uninsured Motorist Insurance.  This type of insurance pays for your expenses due to an accident caused by an uninsured motorist.  This can include financial benefits due to missed wages and medical bills associated with your recovery.  Although drivers are only required to carry liability auto insurance in Tennessee, Uninsured Motorist coverage is the only type of insurance that protects you in the event of an accident with someone who is not insured.

Collision Insurance. If you enjoy the peace of mind knowing that the cost to replace your own vehicle when it’s involved in an accident will be covered, Collision Insurance is right for you.  While you may be an excellent driver, the deer crossing the road in front of you is happy to test that out.  If you swerve and hit a guardrail, you will need collision insurance to repair your vehicle.  Generally, vehicles under finance are required to maintain Collision coverage.

Comprehensive Insurance.  Just like Collision Insurance, this type of auto insurance coverage is usually required when a vehicle is under finance and is carried by those who want to be assured that if their vehicle is damaged, they will be able to use their insurance to cover the cost of repair or replacement.  Comprehensive Insurance is needed to cover the cost to repair damage to your vehicle from fallen branches, vandalism and other damage that is not created by another vehicle.
