Homeowners Insurance
More than a investment, your house is where you live and where you make memories that last a lifetime. Damage to your home can cause major hassles. If a leaking roof or broken window isn’t fixed promptly, even more costly damage could occur. And while you can’t predict accidents or mother nature, you can be prepared. Homeowners policy offers a number of coverage options to protect your home and your belongings whether it’s damage caused by weather, faulty appliances, vandals or other accidents.
If you’ve ever walked into your home after a burglary, the mixture of feelings can be overwhelming. You may go from fear to anger to loss in seconds but you should never feel devastation if you have the right homeowners policy. While sentimental things can never be replaced such as your grandmother’s ring or your great aunt’s silver tea service, a home owner’s policy can go a long way towards getting you and your family back on their feet. You can at least replace clothing and other personal items that are necessary to everyday life. The number of items you use all the time in your kitchen can easily be taken for granted until you need to replace them after a kitchen fire.
A typical Florida homeowner’s policy is structured to include:
- Your dwelling and attached structures such as an attached or built-in garage, screened enclosure or in-ground swimming pool
- Other structures on your property such as a fence, shed, gazebo, detached garage or above ground pool
- Personal Property known as the contents stored on your property such as clothing, furniture, tools and appliances
- Reimbursement for additional living expenses while your home is being repaired or rebuilt and is not habitable
- Personal Liability Coverage that protects you and your spouse, any relatives living with you, and anyone under age 21 in your care from a claim or lawsuit against you for bodily injury/personal damage, sickness, disease or death of others
- Medical payments and medical expenses to others
You may add a rider called Scheduled Personal Property for additional coverage for your fine jewelry, precious antiques and artwork to make sure you’re covered for their value which likely exceeds the standard limits.

Dwelling, Personal Property, Liability
While your policy typically covers damage from fire and tornadoes, some events such as terrorist acts are often not covered in standard Florida homeowners insurance policies. If a tree falls on your house during a storm, you will be covered but if your house falls apart due to lack of maintenance, you will probably not be covered.
Understanding your policy will eliminate surprises when disaster strikes. At Brown Insurance Services, we take great care to ensure you are well informed of the limitations of your policy and advise you if additional coverage is needed for the treasures in your home.
